Conditions

At JJ’s Discount Eyewear, we have provided Oneonta residents with reliable eye care services for many years. read on to learn about several of the conditions our optometrist often treats.

Dry Eye Syndrome

This is a very common condition, especially in women over the age of 50. It often gets worse during dry New York winters. Dry eye syndrome symptoms include a scratchy sensation in the eyes, watering eyes, redness, and burning. It can be very uncomfortable. Treatment typically involves artificial tears and/or ointments to give your eyes moisture and lubrication for your eyelids.

Allergies

Allergic reactions can cause itchy, watery eyes. If you suffer from seasonal allergies, you may notice your symptoms worsen during certain times of the year. Spring pollen and summer blossoms are frequent enemies of the allergy sufferer. Allergy treatment typically involves over-the-counter or prescription eye drops. Another option may be eye rinses that clear pollen from your eyes.

Pink Eye

Pink eye is a highly contagious bacterial or viral infection that causes redness, itchiness, and discharge in the affected eye. You may think of the pink eye as a childhood disease, but adults get it too. Treatment typically involves antibiotic eyedrops or ointments.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is increased pressure in the eye that can lead to optic nerve damage and vision loss. Patients with diabetes are at particularly high risk and should get checked often - at least once a year. Catching glaucoma early can save your eyesight. Treatment typically involves prescription eye drops to lower the pressure in the eye.

Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration is a deterioration of the central part of the retina (the macula) which causes blurred vision or a blind spot in the center of your field of vision. Like glaucoma, patients with diabetes have a higher risk than the general population of developing macular degeneration. There is no cure for macular degeneration, but treatments are available to slow down its progression. So it is very important to catch macular degeneration early. Left untreated, macular degeneration can lead to complete blindness.
